The Hiring Decision Matrix: A tool for Job Seekers in 2024

While Tech hiring is slowly starting to come back, it is still difficult for the majority of job seekers in November, 2024.

Over the last 18 months, I have had the honor to coach over 600 clients from new grads to VPs across all industries located in over 11 countries. Through these conversations, I get a firsthand look at the challenges faced by anyone looking to land a new role in 2024.

These challenges range from navigating interviews successfully, to resume and LinkedIn refinements. By far, the single greatest challenge that I hear is how to identify roles that you would be a good fit for and how to ultimately land the offer. These challenges can be overwhelming, if you are struggling with application fatigue and burnout, check out my guide here.

One of the key tools that I use with my clients is the Hiring Decision Matrix. When applied correctly, this framework can help you realistically assess whether you have a chance with a certain role and more importantly what roles you should be applying for in the first place. Now, let’s get into the framework and how to apply it to your job search.

Hiring Decision Matrix Overview

The first step to using the Hiring Decision Matrix framework effectively to find your perfect job fit is to think about your experience along two axis.

  • Your experience in the role as described: Have you actually done this role before? Is there a proof point in your resume that shows you have done the role at a different company? All of those data points show that you have the relevant experience. It is important to think critically about this when self assessing.
  • Your knowledge of the industry: Have you worked for a competitor before? Are you knowledgeable about the space? These data points show that you could understand what unique challenges and opportunities the company you are applying to has. Similarly, it is important assess critically your own experience in a particular domain when thinking about where you fit on the X axis of the Hiring Decision Matrix.
The not getting interviews zone

The “No Interview” zone

A lot of candidates spend a significant amount of time and effort in the “No Interview” zone. Whenever you see a job on LinkedIn with hundreds of applicants, many (if not most), fit squarely in this zone.

Candidates in the “No Interview” zone have 2 things going agains them. First, they don’t have actual experience doing the role they are applying for. Examples I’ve seen include SDRs that want to become AEs, Designers that want to become PMs and more. What’s more is they are often coming from a different industry.

Key Action: If you are in this zone, don’t expect to get any interviews and don’t spend time applying to those roles.

The not getting offers zone

The “No Offer” Zone

In this zone, candidates generally have direct experience with the actual role but may have done it in a completely different environment. If you find yourself in this zone, you can expect a good amount of interviews that ultimately don’t pan out due to lack of industry experience.

One interesting note, is that the more in demand a particular role is, the more companies will hire from candidates in this zone. As of now in November 2024, companies are generally not hiring in this zone.

Key Action: While applying to these roles can be valuable and sometimes can yield results, you are competing against others who have both experience and knowledge. Shift your focus to the “Hiring Zone”.

The internal transfer zone

The “Internal Transfer” Zone

Candidates in this zone may have deep industry expertise but have not actually done the role before. Maybe you have worked at their competitor, maybe you work in a close industry but you have not done that specific role.

External candidates in this zone don’t usually move forward as companies are not interested in providing the level of training to be successful in a new role. This is the zone where internal transfers have the most success. In the case of an internal transfer, their industry knowledge combined with their company knowledge make investing in new skills worth it from the company perspective.

Key Action: As a Candidate, don’t spend time applying to roles here as they likely won’t yield interviews, let alone offers.

the hiring zone

The “Hiring” Zone

Last but certainly not least, we arrive at the “Hiring” Zone. In 2024, this is where the hires happen. If a reasonable person looking at your background can say that you have actually done the role you are applying for and you have demonstrated knowledge of the space, this is when you become a top candidate.

Key Action: Spend time applying to roles here! The more honest and refined you can be about your own unique experiences and knowledge, the better able you will be to calibrate which roles put you in the hiring zone and ultimately get you hired!

Get in the Zone!

Navigating the job market in 2024 can feel overwhelming, but the Hiring Fit Matrix gives you a practical framework to approach your search with clarity and strategy. By understanding which roles align with your experience and industry knowledge, you can stop wasting time on long-shot applications and focus your energy on opportunities where you truly have a competitive edge.

Remember, the key to success lies in self-awareness and intentionality. Assess your background honestly, target roles that put you in the Hiring Zone, and use this tool to become a more informed and strategic job seeker.

As you move forward, consider how you can keep building your skills and knowledge to eventually expand into new zones on the matrix. Whether it’s through networking, gaining hands-on experience, or deepening your understanding of a particular industry, every effort you make will bring you closer to your career goals.

Take Action: Use the Hiring Fit Matrix to evaluate your next opportunity, and let it guide you to the roles where you can make the greatest impact. Your perfect job fit is out there, and this framework will help you find it.
